Berezan is an ancient Cossacks centurion’s settlement. The first reference to it can be found in historical primary sources of 1616.
Many famous names are connected with Berezan:
hetmans Bogdan Khmelnitsky, Ivan Mazepa, poet and painter Taras Shevchenko, poet-philosopher Gregory Skovoroda, and the Saint Sophrony of Irkutsk.
