The oblast was founded on the 27th of February 1932.
Within the oblast area there are 177 rivers, 13 water storage facilities, lots of lakes.
The longest rivers are the Dnieper, the Desna, the Pripyat (Prypyat), the Teterev (Teteriv), the Ros, the Irpen (Irpin), the Trubezh (Trubizh).
The largest cities are Kiev (Kyiv), Belaya Tserkov (Bila Tserkva), Fastov (Fastiv), Brovary, Borispol (Boryspil).
The biggest lake is Supoy (Supiy).
Forests occupy the territory of approximately 675 000 hectares.
Administrative territorial system consists of 25 raions (districts), 25 cities, 12 of which are of oblast (regional) subordination, 30 urban villages, and 1121 villages.
